The Museum and Memorial Complex of Victims of Political Repression and Totalitarianism «ALZHIR» is a unique monument to the history of past years. It was opened on May 31, 2007, in the village of Akmol, Tselinograd district, Akmola region, on the territory of the former Akmolinsky camp for wives of traitors to the Motherland. The opening of the museum was timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the «Decree on the Establishment of the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression - May 31» in 1997, as well as the 70th anniversary of the beginning of mass political repressions that took millions of lives.
The museum complex consists of the «Stalin Carriage», the Arch of Sorrow monument, the sculptural compositions «Struggle and Hope» and «Despair and Powerlessness», a watchtower and barbed wire camp fence, the «Tears» stele, the Wall of Memory, a barrack with the diorama «Seizure of Children from the Prisoners of the ALZHIR Camp», the «Alash» park, memorial signs, and the museum building.
The museum's exposition is presented on two floors. The exposition in the «Alash» hall presents the history of Kazakhstan from the time of its incorporation into the Russian Empire, as well as the Soviet period and the mass repressions of 1937. The history is presented in the form of archival documents, photo and video materials, interrogation protocols, execution orders, and personal files of the repressed.
The exposition hall on the first floor, «Prisoners of ALZHIR», is dedicated to the history of the Akmolinsky camp for wives of traitors to the Motherland, and to the women who were innocently serving their terms there. The exposition includes family photographs, personal belongings, and works created by the prisoners in the camp.
