International Mountaineering Day

The holiday in honor of mountaineers originated in 1786 thanks to the Swiss climbers Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard.

The holiday in honor of mountaineers originated in 1786 thanks to the Swiss climbers Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard. They climbed Mont Blanc, the highest point of the Alps, at 4,810 meters. Since that day, mountaineers have celebrated their professional holiday on August 8.

Kazakhstan also has many renowned mountaineers. Our climbers began conquering mountains in 1930 with a 4,376-meter peak in the Zailiysky Alatau.

In 2010, Maksut Zhumayev, Vasily Pivtsov, and Vladislav Chekhlov raised the flag of Kazakhstan on the 8,516-meter peak of Lhotse in the Himalayas. Of them, Maksut Zhumayev has twice climbed the 8,848-meter summit of Everest.

We congratulate all our readers who are involved in mountaineering!
